News 2016

19th December
Had just had my attention drawn to the fact that our homebred Calvdale Hot Pink JW has finished the year as joint Top Puppy in breed along with Kath Holts young dog Benny. She maintained that position throughout much of her puppy career and at one point was in fact joint with kennel mate Calvdale Keelman JW who had such a lovely year through puppy. She is one of four different puppies we have been fortunate enough to win Top Puppy in Breed awards at Championship Shows with.

We have been fortunate in as much that we were blessed with quality pups that have proved their worth. We look forward to 2017 and hopefully more successes for the youngstock and also the new selection of Calvdale puppies that hopefully will make appearances in due course. Seen here following her Puppy Group win at East of England. Sired by our own Calvdale Night Court JW Sh CM and how proud am I.

Sad day in the household of my friends Nicola and Ian. Today they had to give sleep to Calvdale Kangaroo Court. Litter brother to Queens Evidence and Question of Fact. Joe was just days short of his 16th birthday. Nicola will miss him dreadfully as he has been part of the family since puppyhood. He had a lovely life and they were great owners.

23rd November
Busy day yesterday with many dogs arriving for eye testing clinic and several of my own undergoing the annual test and now the three yearly Glaucoma test. Some that had been done previously had to represent now the rules are changing. Delighted to say a clean sheet for all Cockers and ESS that underwent the test and also Angela's WSS and Flatcoat. Sigh of relief and a much lighter bank balance.

19th November
Today we attended the North of England Spaniel Club Open Show held at Bowburn in Co Durham. A bit of a detour in the morning as the A1 North was closed for several hours. Beth Holt was our breed judge and she delighted us by not only giving our 6.5 month Calvdale Beautiful Romance BPIB but also BOB. A little later in the day we were even more thrilled to be awarded BPIS under Sylvia Bunting of Mossdew Cocker Spaniel fame. Thanks to the judges, committee and fellow exhibitors .A lovely show as always.

13th November
Long day yesterday with a 4am departure from North Yorkshire in order that we arrive in time for judging at Gundog Breeds of Scotland with road trip company in the form of Graham and Sylvia Gibson and Maddie Eddleston. Michael Keely (Alhambra) was our judge elect and our two youngest show girls made the trip with me. Calvdale Beautiful Romance (Nancy) making her debut was pole position in a class of 4 and was awarded Best Puppy Bitch and then Best Puppy in Breed. Really thrilled with such a lovely start to her showing career which we hope might be truly illustrious. Also with me was Calvdale Love Letters (Kitty) albeit normally shown by Angela she had to put up with me today and we must have not done too badly together because Kitty also won her class. Nothing in the puppy group for such a tender young beginner but the experience will be good for us both I am sure. Long drive home, bouyed by our experiences of the day. Good company, much singing and plenty of coffee to make the miles fly by. Today is Elizabeth's 10th birthday. A day at home with the family and a chance to meet up with some that live further away as a pre Christmas gathering and tea was enjoyed by all. Thanks for all the positive comments on the 'girls' at the show yesterday and well done to all winners. Thanks to Kate for the video. Nice to be able to see your dogs when others film them and also thanks to Rachel for her photography at ring side and also for helping out handling.

11th November
Delighted as both the breeder and handler of our black and white Calvdale Hot Pink JW to find that she is still Top Puppy in Breed. She shares this distinction with Kath Holts Bethryn Devil Moon JW. Both now out of puppy and proceeding in their Junior careers but nice to have been recognised and appreciated.

6th November

30th October
An early start this monring to take the 'high road' up to the Borders and above Gretna to attend the Border Counties Gundog Assessment for the Hungarian Vizsla. Delighted to say I passed the A3 Assessment for the breed and spent the day with some super people. Good food, well organised event. Feather in the cap for BCGC Committee. Well done and thank you. Whoop whoop.

10th October
My 'writings' had to wait till today after having not arrived home till almost midnight from the SESSS Assessment in New Haw Surrey, where I was one of the Assessors. Had a lovely day, met some nice folks who I didn't know and spent time with some I did. Lovely to had time to 'socialise' a little more and 'break bread' with some truly lovely folks. Well done committee for holding this event. The kitchen staff were simply super and provided us all with plenty to eat and drink all day long.

It was good to see the number of people who still want to learn more about our lovely breed and to be able to facilitate any steps they can take towards furthering their interest is well worthwhile and, I believe, a necessary 'put back' into the breed that has for almost 40 years given me so much pleasure. Terrific to see so many folk get through and attain a pass. Some of you didn't make it and maybe you will come back next time with renewed perseverance. Seeing the relief on some of the faces when the certificates were handed out was rewarding.

Well done you all but never never give up learning about our breed as you progress and we will all have done our job properly A final thank you to those who brought dogs for the process. They allbehaved so well and were a credit to owners/handlers and the breed.

1st October
Lovely weekend. Driffield Championship Show on Friday where Martin Adner judged ESS without CC's and where he awarded Best Bitch and BOS to Calvdale Hot Pink at 14 months old. Her litter brother Calvdale Nash Bridges won Junior Dog.

Quick dash up the A19 to Ripon Racecourse for Northen English Springer on Saturday where Anita Tattersal (Alanea) was our judge and she awarded Calvdale Hot Pink Reserve Best Bitch. Nice weekend for the little black and white pocket rocket . Thanks to both judges and to Rachel Jefferson for kindly coming along to handle 'Cora' for me today. Huge CONGRATULATIONS to Maddie on winning BIS with litter brother Calvdale Nash Bridges. Well done to all winners.

Very proud of these two lovely exhibits. Calvdale Hot Pink and her brother Calvdale Nash Bridges when being exhibited at the recent Darlington Championship Show. Hot Pink (Cora) 1st in a strong Junior Bitch class (first time in Junior). Nash Bridges (Bertie) 2nd in Junior Dog and owned by Maddie Eddleston. Two lovely black and whites. Two lovely English Springers.

10th July
Well what a wonderful day at East Of England Championship Show yesterday. My two ESS equited themselves well and I could have asked them to do no more. Pride of place had to go to our homebred Calvdale Hot Pink who was declared BPIB under our judge Anthony Alan. Under Puppy Group judge Ray Moreland she was awarded Puppy Group 1 and did her best in the quality crammed Best Puppy in Show lineup. I had a face nearly as red as the jacket - the heat was overwhelming and that added to the adrenalin and the excitement of the moment made for more than a little bit of a 'glow'. Home after a slightly longer route taken back due to the closure of the A1 North but home safe with newly crowned Calvdale Zero to Hero JW Sh CM who is the Arden Grange Top ESS half way leader and Calvdale Hot Pink who is Our Dogs joint Top Puppy in Breed with her kennel mate Calvdale Keelman JW. Congratulation to all winners yesterday and thank you so very much for the very many warm congratulations on our win and we are thrilled.

25th June
Terrific day at Blackpool winniing 3rd and crowning CC with our homebred boy Calvdale Zero to Hero JW ShCM. Thanks to our judge Penny Williams for the final piece in the jigsaw. Adding to our celebration was daughter Angela who piloted her homebred Chanangel Sticky Wicket JW ShCM (WSS) to CC and BOB after a run of 10 RCC's. Well done and delighted for you too. Congratulations to all other class winners and well placed Calvdales today and to Graham and Sylvia, Clare, Maddie and Jo, thank you for all the help getting dogs back and forth to the ring. Calvdale Hot Pink 1st Puppy Bitch. Calvdale Keelman JW 1st in Junior Dog. Calvdale Love Letters making her champ show debut was a very promising 2nd in MPB. Congrats to all and thrilled skinny to have added another Show Champion to our ranks.

12th June
Fabulous day at Northern English Springer Spaniel Championship Show today at Hurworth Nr Darlington. Despite ones best efforts as Secretary the weather was against us and having rained all night it was felt that the ground was too slippy underfoot to risk starting judging outside. We made the best of what we had indoors and the show seemed to go very well indeed. Our judge from America thoroughly enjoyed herself and was delighted with the dogs she got to judge. A few of us had a meal together after the show and it was nice to have a bit of social time together. We wish our friend from the USA a safe journey onwards to Scotland and eventually home safe after her trip to us.

21st May
Back to normality this morning and somewhat stiff after all the running around showing yesterday but so very very proud of our boy Calvdale Zero to Hero JW Sh CM taking his 2nd CC plus the icing on the cake with BOB and then Group 2 in a lovely line up. Many thanks to our breed judge Jinty Gill Davies and to Group judge Ann Moss. What a super day. Calvdale Hot Pink being awarded another BPIB only added to the achievements and made the heart swell a little more. Very proud breeders.

Pleasant day at Birmingham National yesterday under breed judge Graham Osbourne. Calvdale Keelman winner of PD, Best Puppy Dog and Res in Eukanuba Puppy Stakes. Calvdale Zero to Hero JW ShCM 2nd in Limit Dog. Calvdale Great Escape stood alone but still he was there and took the RCC. Calvdale Hot Pink winner of MPB and Best puppy over her half brother. Well done to Clare winning PB, Sylvia won I think Novice bitch. George and Angela Ternent won Junior Bitch with Leila. Maddie took 2nd in MPD with Calvdale Nash Bridges at his first Champ Show appearance and generally we all did pretty well. Must thank George who despite suffering with his back managed to stay home and 'bitch watch' for me. Thanks to Angela Ternent, Sylvia and Graham Gibson for being my travel companions and general assistants with dogs and quick changes on the day. Sylvia for the photos, Sarah for her assistance handling and Clare also for her help. Well done team!

Well it was a long ride there and it seemed an even longer ride home but 'well happy' with the outcome for our lovely homebred Calvdale Night Court JW ShCM taking his 2nd CC under breed specialist Wendy Walker (Dexbenella) at the ESSC of Wales. Also then going on to Best in Show. Best Puppy sired by our Calvdale Zero to Hero. Today the NESSS hosted a seminar/assessment on the English Springer Spaniel. A good day was had with plenty of delegates attending, some lovely dogs to assess, great speakers and assessors. Two raffles took place and the one for the British Heart Foundation raised £63 I am delighted to say. The large box of fruit and veg was won by Margaret Masterman. Success was the order of the day and with a wonderful presentation and attention to detail being soaked up by the delegates all went very well indeed. I must thank all those that made it possible including the speakers, the handlers and dogs, assessors and of course the wonderful ladies in the kitchen who once again provided marvellous catering second to none. Fab day. THANK YOU ALL!

Just to say what a totally fabulous day I had juding ESS at Crufts yesterday. Many lovely dogs went cardless but what a treat to have so much of the cream from countries around the world. A joy too for me to have the company of family and friends who travelled to support me and help make the day so very enjoyable Will settle down to critique writing when the visitors have left and the fatigue is replaced with some energy. An extra treat to see our breed in a VT clip on Crufts programme too.

10th March
Just ready to leave now and head to the Metropole Birmingham for our stay tonight prior to my judging appointment tomorrow at Crufts where I am to judge my favourite breed, English Springer Spaniels. It is the highlight of anyone's judging career I think and I am looking forward to it enormously. Have many times exhibited at Crufts with great success over the years but tomorrow will be different. I thank all those that have entered and am looking forward to judging the dogs I have entered under me to the very best of my ability as always. I will judge as I see them and hope to have a lovely selection.

Lovely if somewhat busy weekend.

Saturday found us at the Southern English Springer Spaniel Society Championship Show at Chalfont St Giles under judge Helene Bjorkman of kennel Barecho. Delighted to say that our homebred Calvdale Keelman was once again declared Best Puppy in Show. His litter sister Calvdale Rag Nymph won three classes. Clare Newlove won MPD with her youngster who is sired by Calvdale Zero to Hero and out of Calvdale Barely Legal. She also had a good placing in a strong MPB class with the litter sister. Ray Smith with his Melverly Bueno Notte (apologise if spelt incorrectly) winning the dog CC and BIS and he is another Zero to Hero son. The breeding did very well and we must say a huge thank you to Helene and also to the Officers and Committee of the Society for putting on such an enjoyable show. Lovely day spent with friends and in good company and nice to meet some new acquaintances too.

A show I almost didn't attend due to the uset of the previous week but one has to go forward or you just stand still. A frosty 5am start to Stafford Show Ground for Manchester Championship Show led to Calvdale Keelman winning MPD and PD, BPD and ultimately BPIB under Stephanie from Australia at Manchester Championship Show. He then went on to a fabulous Puppy Group 3 under esteemed judge Jill Peak.

3rd January
At North and South Shields Open Show Calvdale Keelman was BPIB and BOB under judge Penny Sands, Puppy Group 1 under Angus Macara and then BPIS under Maureen byrne. What a great start to the year.
